Marvin Heiferman's Essay & My Understanding of Photograpy

In Marvin Heiferman's "Photography Changes Everything," he goes into detail about how when it comes to photography, there is not just one understanding or viewpoint. When asked this question, "What is Photography?" people tend to state and stand on what they believe photography is. They agree and disagree, give examples, and some may even change their viewpoint on what photography means to them because they found someone else's viewpoint to be quite interesting. There is no real implicit answer to what photography should and/or can be. As said in the reading, the more people try to figure out photography and whatnot, the more complex and difficult it becomes because there is no right or wrong answer. Different people see photos in ways that work for them, like a person that has an interest of nature would have an admiration for nature photography and see all of its beauty while someone could be less interested in nature would see it just as pretty or interesting.

In addition, Heiferman then starts going on about how different people reflect their personalities in their photography. He also talks about photography having the ability to trigger some kind of emotion and feelings towards the art itself and/or bring back things from the persons life. Photography also has the ability to change how people feel, their wants and needs, who they are, their views about the world, people's past, and what we do on a daily basis. At the end of the day, photography is what we make it. Photography has evolved over the years and will continue to evolve in the future.

What is photography to me? To be completely honest, I wouldn't have an answer to tell you. I take pictures and selfies but I always thought of it as something quick, not really art unlike photography. Photography is professional in my eyes. That kind of professionalism takes all kinds of skills and precision which I admire about people. To me. Photography comes from all aspects of life; school, work, friends and family, animals, plants and so much more.
